Wayne Rooney Must Overcome Weight Issues - Paul Parker

Rooney score in Manchester United's Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Sunday either side of goals from Juan Mata and new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
However, fans took to Twitter to criticise his display, with many demanding Henrik Mkhitaryan replace their skipper in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up after he missed an early chance.
And Parker, who played for the Old Trafford club between 1991 and 1996, believes Rooney must overcome weight issues if he is to have a future at the cub.

“This is a defining season for Wayne Rooney,” he said speaking to 888 sport.
“It’s no longer about him breaking records but finishing his career at Manchester United. He needs to show his worth and that he deserves to be in the team and not just because of marketing.
“As much as people appreciate what he’s done over the years and how many goals he’s scored football is about now and being judged on now.

Paul Parker believes Wayne Rooney must prove himself at Manchester United this season
“If someone had only heard of Wayne Rooney but seen him now they’d think ‘Who is this fella? He’s over-weight and slow. That shot was terrible and it looks like he can’t move or shift his body quick enough.’”
“That’s the problem with football today – you’re getting judged by people who have only heard about you and not seen you in previous seasons.”
Mourinho is determined to play Rooney in a forward role despite Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson utilising him in midfield last season.
However, with Ibrahimovic in the side and Marcus Rashford knocking on the door, his task to stay in United’s starting line-up has never been more difficult.
